The brown recluse spider has 13 known varieties. They are medium-sized spiders with a pale brown to dark brown color. They have four pairs of long, thin legs and six eyes that are arranged in pairs as compared to other spiders that have eight eyes. Their distinguishing characteristic is the presence of violin or fiddle-shaped marks on top of their abdomen which is why they are sometimes referred to as the fiddleback spider or brown fiddler. On average, they can grow from six to 20 millimeters in length. Average lifespan is up to 2 years. The females can hatch 50 eggs in one sac.

Habitat

In their natural habitat, brown recluse spiders spin irregular webs that are commonly found in brush and trees. When in residential areas and other establishments, they prefer areas that are seldom disturbed. They are also known to hide in objects that are seldom used and in some instances in shoe racks, dressers, and other stocked objects. True to their name, they prefer to hide.

Diet

Their main diet consists of insects like cockroaches, crickets, flies, mosquitoes, beetles, and other smaller spiders that are trapped in their webs. They prefer hunting at night. They also feed on dead insects.

Threats to Humans

Due to the destruction of their natural habitats, there are many reports of household infestation by brown recluse spiders in Nebraska. One might not know that his house is infested because of the reclusive behavior of these spiders. Usually, an infestation is only discovered when one or more of these spiders are found. This behavior is a contributing factor to why they can easily propagate without your knowledge.

The primary threat of brown fiddlers to Nebraska residents is their venomous bites. They secrete venoms through their fangs as a means of protecting themselves. It may require some three to eight hours for an individual to notice that he is actually bitten; usually not until redness, swelling, itching, and inflammation starts to manifest in the affected area. In severe cases, it can cause fever and nausea. Necrotic lesions can also appear.

In general, the Black Widow male species are smaller than its female counterparts. The males can grow to only ¼ inch even in maturity, while the female species can grow up to 1.5 inches. The lifespan of male species is also shorter than the females. The males can live up to 2 months while the females can live up to three years. This is because, the males are eventually killed by the female after mating; thus, they are also called mourning spiders. The female can lay 300 to 400 eggs per birth. When hatched, only a handful survive because they eat each other.

Habitat

Black Widows prefer dark areas where they can freely spin their webs to catch their prey. In the natural surroundings, they can be found in the middle of the forests, on top of high trees and in caves. They also prefer dry surroundings. In Nebraska, there are sightings in drain pipes, rocky areas and several households especially in basements and attics.

Diet

The main diet of a female black widow spider consists of her mates. Yes, she eventually eats them after mating. Both male and female species prey on a variety of insects including flies, mosquitoes, moths, woodlice, diplopods and chilopods. They trap their prey by secreting venom and wait for ten minutes for the poison to weaken or kill the insect to be eaten. They secrete digestive enzymes all over the body of its prey to break it down for easy consuming.

Threat to Humans

Due to its very powerful venom, the black widow spider is a considerable threat to humans, especially when several of them are found inhabiting a home or place of business. In Nebraska alone, there have been alarming incidents of widow bites especially in workplaces where there are large store rooms and warehouses.

The venom of Black Widow is considered more powerful than the venom of some rattlesnakes. Their venom can cause high fever, nausea and vomiting. Some say that their bites can be fatal to humans. Although, there is relatively low statistics to support that fact.

The German cockroach is one of the most common species of cockroach found in Nebraska. It can grow to up to 1.5 inches on average; however, it can grow larger in some cases. Its color ranges from pale brown to tan brown to dark brown. It is active all day; however, most of its activity is carried out during the night. It has six legs arranged in pairs. It also has wings that it uses for greater mobility and food hunting tasks.

Habitat

You might be surprised to know that the German cockroach is not German or even European at all. In fact, its origin is traced to Africa. They were brought to Nebraska by migrants and travelers during the period of exploration and territorial expansion.

They are known to be of little tolerance to cold weather and prefer to live in warmer areas. This is the reason why many of them are found in homes, kitchens, businesses, and other buildings that can provide warmth and ample food.

Diet

The diet of German Cockroach is fairly unique. They eat a variety of food available from the resources around them. They eat starchy and sugary foods, even those that are from plant sources. They also eat meat and fish especially greasy and oily ones. They also feed on non living things such as glue, gels, and papers. German Cockroaches even feed on dead bodies of other animals and insects. At times, they can be cannibalistic eating the legs and other body parts of their fellow cockroaches.

Threat to Humans

The German cockroach has the ability to quickly reproduce. In a short period, a house infestation can spread to nearby homes. They are also known carriers of diseases and can potentially contaminate food and water sources through their exoskeleton or skin castings. These body peelings are also potential allergens and can increase the risks of asthma occurrence. They also emit odor that can also cause sickness and allergic reactions.

Ants, like, termites are considered social insects because they also live in colonies. Their society is based on a hierarchy composed of the queen, soldiers and workers.

There are 22,000 species of ants, of which only 12 500 are successfully classified to date. The common species are either red or black in color. Their average size ranges from 0.75 to 52 millimeters. Their bodies are divided into three sections – the head, the thorax and the gaster.

Habitat

Ants can adapt to a wide variety of climates and environments. There are species found in mountains, forests and other natural places. Most species build colonies in soil while others can thrive in woods such as tree barks. Other species tend to live in residential areas and other structures where they can be near food sources.

Diet

Different ant species have different diets. Most of them are omnivores. They can eat plants and animals, living and dead alike. For this reason, they can also be regarded as scavengers. Species that we usually find in homes are usually attracted by an excess of poorly kept food and sanitary conditions. Their preference for sugar and starch makes them kitchen and dining table regulars.

Threat to Humans

Ants in large numbers are capable of causing extensive damage if not controlled . The carpenter species can damage wooden structures, furniture and fixtures in homes and commercial buildings. These damages are not new to many homes in Nebraska. In fact, there is an alarming increase in ant infestation in many households.

Leaf cutting species are causing significant damage in agricultural lands and even in home gardens. They feed on the leaves of different plants that can eventually lead to the plant’s death. In worse cases, colonies can even be built inside the home causing structural damage that is costly to repair .

I have been a customer of ABC Termite and Pest Control since December of 2007. After the intial inspection was done on my house it was determined I needed to have a termite treatment done. I knew ABC would take care of all my bug issues from that point on. I have been on a maintenance plan where ABC comes every other month to spray my house for bugs.

They always ask me if I notice any types of bugs that have appeared since their last treatment and they always tell me if I notice anything between services to give them a call so they can check it out before it becomes a problem.

I also appreciate that they call me the day before my service to remind me they will be coming. Their employees always show up on time and are very courteous. I never hesitate to recommend ABC Termite and Pest Control to my friends, family and anyone I else I hear talking about bug issues.

Like most plains states, Nebraska harbors a large population of voles. Voles typically grow to three to six inches in length and often have five to ten litters a year with each litter averaging five to ten offspring. As a result, vole populations can grow very quickly in a short period of time.

Voles are often mistaken for Moles, mice, rats, shrews and sometimes gophers. The reason for the confusion is that voles are unique in that they are alittle each of the other animals they are often thougth to be. Voles are sometimes confused with gophers because they also burrow and usually have many exit holes. If they enter the house, they are commonly thought to be a mouse. Many times voles will occupy the abandon mole tunnels leaving a homeowner to believe moles are active when it’s actually a vole infestation.

Voles are omnivores willing to each both plants and animals. They will also eat most any nut or fruit. Their preference for plants is usually where there presense is most evident and destructive.

Voles will target root systems and will burrow underground and feed until the plant is dead. Bulbs are also a favorite of the vole. Their ability to tunnel and burrow gives them undetected access to flower beds and gardens. Many times the only indication of a Vole infestation is after they have destroyed numerous plants.
