Proper Bedroom Prep

The bedroom requires careful preparation because beds and mattresses are common hiding places for bed bugs. Remove all bedding and place mattresses and box springs in an upright position to allow complete access for treatment teams. Applying heat treatment for bed bugs alongside chemical methods improves results. Mattress encasements play a vital role in long-term prevention and are part of the comprehensive residential pest control solution.

Bed Bug Prep Checklist

Proper preparation is essential for effective bed bug control. Follow these steps to prepare your home for treatment:

  • Clear floors and furniture of any items.
  • Empty dressers, nightstands, and shelves in spaces that will require spraying.
  • Vacuum floors and furniture thoroughly before and after service, starting with rooms other than bedrooms and mattresses, which should be done last.
  • Dispose of vacuum bags or clean bagless vacuums according to manufacturer recommendations to prevent reinfestation.
  • Use totes for small items such as frames, books, and knickknacks; bedlam aerosol can be used when necessary.
  • Place mattresses and box springs, free of bedding, upright in an open area to allow spraying on all sides.
  • Remove furniture cushions and, if possible, place furniture upside down.
  • For heavy infestations, remove electrical outlet and light switch covers on the first treatment only.
  • Remove all wall hangings and wipe behind them in heavy infestations.
  • For light infestations, remove wall hangings in bedrooms and near furniture.
  • Wash all bedding, clothes, and fabric items thoroughly.
  • Dry fabric items for at least 30 minutes or longer depending on material thickness.
  • After drying, place fabric items in sealed bags without drawstrings and keep sealed throughout the treatment period, opening only what is needed daily and resealing afterward.
  • Pull out and make hide-a-beds accessible for service.
  • All people and pets should vacate the premises for at least 4 hours; if oxygen is in use, vacate for at least 8 hours.
  • Discard any furniture with rips or tears as it can harbor persistent bed bug populations.
  • Purchase mattress covers for mattresses and box springs to apply immediately after the initial treatment and keep on until worn out.
  • The severity of infestation, quality of preparation, and clutter determine the number of treatments needed, with 2 to 5 treatments being normal.
